Foundational Values - Character Development in Basic Combat Training

A trainee-focused moral leadership and character development program designed to integrate into a ten-week Basic Combat Training Cycle. Foundational Values uses the Army Values, self-reflection, and the idea of The Golden Mean from Aristotelian virtue ethics to help trainees develop the character necessary to help them be successful soldiers and human beings.

Foundational Values is an expansion and application of the Values as Virtues moral leadership training presentation.

Virtue Ethics and The United States Army

With the Army values already built into the culture of the Army, they provide a starting point for exploring virtue ethics more deeply. Rather than seeing them as a list of rules or duties soldiers must follow, the Army should see them as virtues to be practiced and cultivated both in and out of uniform.
